In the GDR it was named &#8216;RAW Ernst Th\u00e4lmann Halle&#8217; and had approx 2000 workers. During its operating time, it repaired several locomotives, especially shunting engines. A heating plant was constructed in the area, which was also used to heat the &#8216;Interhotel Stadt Leipzig&#8217;. In the workshop the final assembly of the &#8216;Saxonia&#8217; took place in 1988 which was a replica of the first German steam locomotive. It was closed down in 1996 by the Deutsche Bahn.
