The factory belonged to the VEB Thüringer Obertrikotagen Apolda (TOA) during the GDR. Several production and administration buildings were scattered across the whole city. It was the biggest knitwear manufacturer in the entire GDR with about 3000 workers in 1988. However, since 1990 the situation worsened due to missing jobs and the coherent migration of thousands of workers out of the city Apolda. This ultimately led to the closure of the factory in the 90s.
