The barracks were constructed during the years 1939/40 for soldiers of the Wehrmacht and workers of the Heeresversuchsanstalt. It consists of 8 barrack buildings arranged in an U-shape and a bigger general building which housed a canteen. After 1945 emigrants of the east moved in the buildings for 3 years. In 1948 till 1958 the barracks were used by a soviet squadron which was later transferred to the city Ribnitz-Damgarten. During these years, the buildings became worse and worse, with even some doors and windows missing. The basements were full of feces and coal greeting, but were cleared out in 1961. Till the end of the GDR, NVA pilots of the airfield Peenemünde were accommodated in the barracks. When the NVA disbanded, the area was abandoned.
