In the first half of the 20th century, the building which was built as a Kurhaus was renovated to become a sanatorium. It provided ideal conditions for cardiovascular patients and treatments according to the methods of Sebastian Kneipp. In 1976, the sanatorium was nationalized but continued to operate as part of the Ernst-Thälmann-Heim, serving as a medical facility. The former theater hall was transformed to a gym during this time. The front building was housing the patient and treatment rooms, while the extension at the back provided space for the kitchen, dining hall and theater/gym. However, following the political changes after the reunification of Germany, the spa industry in Friedrichsbrunn collapsed. Like many others the health resort was closed down and fell into disrepair.
