Capturing decay.

Let there be light

Experiencing our first abandoned place with power in Beichlingen at the beginning of 2021 was an astonishing memory. Since then we collected images of similar experiences here in this post.

So why is it so special to us? We can’t really describe it actually, but the thing which amazes us is probably the following: The electric light, being a manifest of the modern human and his ability to be able to make the night to day in contrast to disorder and post-human circumstances in abandoned places together with nature taking back which was once human. Seeing a fluorescent light flicker in a living room which is literally rotting away is just a magical but melancholic feeling. It’s certainly an interesting and almost unreal atmosphere in the room. Seeing a home from a different era with a small glimpse of the human civilization it once had in itself is overwhelmingly wistful. The fact that most of these lamps haven’t been switched on since 30 years and now finally glow again for one last time before finally succumbing to the imminent decay and end of the structure is just a bittersweet melancholic thought but shows the inevitable cycle of time, the construction and decay, it puts all in perspective.

We constantly are on the hunt for buildings with working electricity, which sadly are pretty rare. Most of the time, power has been turned off, all the electrics have been salvaged or the lights have been smashed. With the images below, we hope we can give you an insight into this astonishing atmosphere, but it’s incomparable to the feelings you get of experiencing it in person.

New pictures will be added to the gallery at the bottom of the page as soon as we photographed a new place with working lights.
