The slaughterhouse was built in 1891 by the architect Karl Otto Lohausen near the railroad. In the years 1932-1939 the area got expanded several times and new buildings were constructed. During the years of the GDR it got renamed in VEB Schlacht- und Verarbeitungsbetrieb Halle. At the end of the 70s the slaughterhouse housed about 1000 pigs, which was more than the slaughterhouse could handle. Till the end of the GDR it was run over its capacity and exemptions directly from the state. This led to a lot of meat becoming depraved since the cooling system wasn’t made for such big quantities. The slaughterhouse closed down in 1993.
