The sanatorium which was named after prince Albrecht von Preußen was opened in 1897 and had a capacity of 40 patients. The facility was there to treat tuberculosis, which was a common disease at the time. Over the years, the capacity was significantly enlarged to 100 male and 80 female patients in 1930. During the GDR, it got turned into a hospital specialized on lung diseases. In its last years it operated as a cardiovascular sanatorium and in 1991 as a rehabilitation clinic. It finally got closed down in 1993 and was abandoned since then. During the 2000s, several plans were made to renovate the building and turn it into a hotel, but this never happened. In August 2013 the building was set on fire and burned down almost completely.
