Sanatorium Carolagrün

The construction of the tuberculosis sanatorium for women was planned in 1898 and the cornerstone was laid on the 5th of August in 1899. The building was named after queen Carola, who had birthday on the same day. 14 months later it was finished and even Queen Carola showed up to the opening ceremony. In the year 1907 the main building got expanded by an additional ward to treat children suffering from tuberculosis. 6 years later, a complete separate children’s home with 40 beds and a small school was finished and started its operation. On the 1st of April 1966 the sanatorium was incorporated by the ‘Fachkrankenhaus für Kinder- und Jugendneuropsychiatrie Bad Reiboldsgrün’. From then on it served as a place to treat children with psychological problems.

After 1989 the buildings were used as a place to care for mentally disabled children. In the following years several dorms were established in the buildings. The facility wasn’t an inviting place for children to be at, mostly due to the big and not very cozy rooms. The life quality of many residents which were transferred to more modern and smaller facility improved drastically. Due to these realizations the psychiatry closed down in 2000, ceasing the usage of the buildings which were once the sanatorium Carolagrün. The complex was bought by an investor in 2004 who put in new windows in the main building and made the roof weatherproof. However, as we can tell by 2022, some of these windows are already broken and water is getting into the building in several places.
