Capturing decay.

Piano components factory Flemming

The factory was founded by Hermann Franz Flemming in 1874 and the majority of the buildings which can be seen today were built in the 1890s. In them, several piano components were produced, especially the mechanical parts. In the 1920s about 250 people worked in the factory, which was also co-owned by Hermann Flemmings son Walther at this time. The parts were sold to many other companies all over Germany, while the main buyer was the piano factory Julius Blüthner. After the 2nd world war, the factory was renamed in “H. F. Flemming KG” and continued its production in the new GDR. The Flemming factory was the only factory in the whole GDR which produced piano components. In the year 1978 the name was changed to “VEB Deutsche Piano-Union-Leipzig, Werk Leipzig-Leutzsch, Flügel- und Pianomechaniken”. About 180 people worked in the factory till the end of the GDR in 1990. The company went bankrupt and the factory was shut down, leaving the buildings to decay. In the year 1999 a big fire happened in the old factory buildings, damaging them even further.
