The main building was constructed in the 1920s, while other buildings followed in the 1930s. The school was named ‘Höhere Fachschule für Wirkerei und Strickerei’ which means a school for knitting and embroidering in English. In the 1950s, the biggest school for textile and clothing production of the GDR was situated in the buildings. About 700 students were educated simultaneously to become engineers, foremen and technicians. After the GDR ceased to exist, some structures in the area were used by the Technical University Chemnitz for the faculties of economics and philosophy. However, they abandoned the whole area in the late 90s. The attic of the former main building burned down completely in 2013, severely damaging it.
