The Sanatorium was opened in 1898 to treat Tuberculosis patients via the Knapp method. The patients were primarily miners, who got their lung diseases, resulting from their dusty work, treated there. In war times the building was also used as a hospital to treat wounded soldiers. After the Second World War it served use for the Soviet Army until 1991, when it became a hospital for paraplegics operating till 1997, then it finally closed down. Nowadays the complex is in a bad shape due to the extremely hostile weather of the region.
