Capturing decay.

RAW Halle

The railway maintenance facility was built in the 1860s and later expanded by the ‘Königlich-Preußischen Staatseisenbahn’ in 1910. In the GDR it was named ‘RAW Ernst Thälmann Halle’ and had approx 2000 workers. During its operating time, it repaired several locomotives, especially shunting engines. A heating plant was constructed in the area, which was also used to heat the ‘Interhotel Stadt Leipzig’. In the workshop the final assembly of the ‘Saxonia’ took place in 1988 which was a replica of the first German steam locomotive. It was closed down in 1996 by the Deutsche Bahn. Since 2020, plans exist to turn the area into an IT center with office space for Start-Up businesses.
