The water mill Martinswerk was built in 1879 as a factory for making wooden strips and grinding wood along the Ilm river. In 1901, the production of hardboard was also added. The expropriation of the factory in the GDR was carried out gradually from 1964 until the Martinswerk became a state-owned enterprise (VEB) in 1972. Production was stopped in the mid-1980s. The hydroelectric power plant was restored by the initiative of Jochen Köhler. From 1985 until 1995, the facility was used as a juice factory. It was privatized again in 1991. However, due to unresolved ownership issues, the building was abandoned in 1995.
